Table of Ancestors

THE PURPOSE OF A GENEALOGICAL TABLE

A genealogical table shows clearly that we are not only descended from our fore-fathers. We have a father and a mother, two grand-fathers and two grand-mothers. Ten generations before, we can have 1024 ancestors, provided that not two closely or farther related persons found together. All these ancestors are involved in our existence of today into exactly the same degree. From the paternal line, we additionally have the Y chromosomes or YDNA and our last name. Even though the right tradition of this name is not always ensured. We have inherited the mitochondrial DNA from the maternal line. The maternal line has the advantage that this is more secure. In genealogy though, the maternal lines in general come off badly.

With the help of a genealogical table we also see that there are probably no pure Emmentalers, Oberländers, Berner or Swiss. Too many people moved around in Europe in dark past. So we know for Switzerland that the Helvetians immigrated into our country about 200 before Christ and then mixed with the pre-population after that. 200 years after this, the Romans immigrated into Switzerland. About 400 past Christ they retired to Italy and Alemannic hordes started to settle our country. During a famine in Friesland every tenth father of a family shall, as a legend tells, have emigrated. A cold winter has prevented them from exceeding the Alps, on what they shall have set up in the Oberhasli and in the canton Schwyz. But also in later time, people were not too lazy for walking and discovering the beauties of the far countries.

When my great-great-great parents lived, they certainly didn’t care about these events. Everyone of them knew only that his place of citizenship was in Rüderswil, Jegenstorf, Lauperswil, Hettiswil, Trub, Rüderswil, Riedwil, Innertkirchen, Stäfa, Meilen, Schwanden bei Brienz, Brienz, Brienzwiler, Iseltwald, Niederried b.I. or in Grindelwald.

32 GREAT-GREAT-GREAT PARENTS OF PETER WÄLTI *1943

As this is with all living beings, my genes do not only consist of those of the paternal line. For this reason, I have also set up a genealogical table. This shows that the roots of almost all my ancestors are in the canton of Berne. Even though several people perhaps never lived there, they had their place of citizenship in:

Emmental 6                    Kanton Zürich 2      Oberhasli 2
Fraubrunnen Amt 1        Brienzersee 15       Oberaargau 1     Grindelwald 5
